Speed Restrictions and Traffic News
At last Wokingham District Council
has agreed the long-awaited speed restrictions on the A321
through the middle of the village.
This means that between Islandstone Lane in the south through
to Broadwater in the north the current 60mph will be reduced to 40mph,
and the 40mph limit in the centre of the village reduced to 30mph.
The TRO, or Traffic Regulation Order, also affects roads leading from the A321
in the 30mph area. These will have 30mph limits too.
There is now a 21 day consultation period during which time the Parish Council and HVS
will be consulted about the design and placement of the signage,
which should be up by late January or early February.
Any objections will be taken into account at the next Highways meeting
and could result in delays to the implementation of the speed limits.
HVS will continue to support residents who are anxious about the speed of traffic
through the village
(when the road-works and traffic lights are not there to slow down drivers),
and will ask Thames Valley Police
to site speed enforcement cameras in the village.
Straight Mile
There is even more traffic than usual through Hurst this winter because of
the closure of the M4 bridge on the Straight Mile at Billingbear.
This is a long-term problem because the bridge embankments are unsafe
and the road has subsided.
Highway engineers are carrying out a full assessment to see what remedial repairs
can be done, but closure is for an indefinite period
while there is an investigation into the causes of the collapse.
Safe Routes to School
Parents, teachers and governors from St Nicholas Primary School are discussing
the Safe Routes to School with the District Council.
Plans will soon be available for consultation with the Parish Council and HVS
before it goes to the Highways Board in December.
The footpath between Sawpit Road and Nursery Close has recently been completed.
