Thirty years on – HVS continues to serve the village community

Hurst Village Society was formed just over 30 years ago in December 1971, and the first newsletter was published in March 1972. Since then the Society has served the village community in many ways.

The Society was founded to prevent further gravel extraction and to preserve the rural aspect of the village. Its aims have since widened to include the provision of an independent focal point for the community, promoting the use of amenities, and encouraging involvement in village activities.

We don't have the threat of more gravel extraction, but there are many local issues that do concern people, ranging from the speed and volume of traffic through the village, to the protection of flora and fauna in local fields, ponds and hedgerows.

Everyone in Hurst who is a member of the Society can make their views known about issues that affect them at the Annual General Meeting on Friday 1 March in the Small Village Hall at 8pm. The annual membership fee is £5, and you will find an application/renewal form in this newsletter. Join at the AGM and have your say.

If you would like to take a more active role in village life, please join our committee. We are especially looking for someone to take on the Environment work. Currently, there are 10 committee members – and we can have 15. A third of the committee will be standing down this year and may offer themselves for re-election. The committee nomination form is also in this newsletter.

The AGM will include: chairman's review, committee reports and a question and answer session. Light refreshments will follow this open discussion.
